Retired Montreal policeman sanctioned for remarks to student protester

Montreal’s police ethics committee bas ruled that a now-retired city detective committed an ethical breach when he told a protesting student that if his own kids had participated in such a demonstration, “they’d have received a kick in the ass.”

Jean-Marc Dextraze admitted he should have been more patient and stopped arguing with Lynda Khelil on the night of the demonstration in March 2013.

The committee ruled Dextraze abused his authority and had been intimidating in his exchange with Khelil at the Centre Opérationnel Est after she was arrested and charged with participating in an illegal demonstration.

Dextraze’s sanction is a 30-day disqualification from exercising the functions of a peace officer, if he ever seeks to do so again. He retired last summer after 31 years with the force.
