Soirée de causerie avec Cara Hoffman

Le jeudi 27 octobre prochain (et non pas le 23), le comité événement de la librairie L’Insoumise et de la bibliothèque anarchiste D.I.R.A. organise une soirée de causerie autour du livre So Much Pretty avec son auteure Cara Hoffman et l’animatrice Carole Lamoureux. Cet événement gratuit aura lieu à la bibliothèque anarchiste D.I.R.A. au 2035 boulevard St-Laurent à Montréal à 19h.

Ce livre, acclamé par la critique étasunienne, nous le choisissons pour sa dimension fortement politique et la puissance de son écriture. Cet événement sera aussi l’occasion d’entendre l’écrivaine Mme Hoffman discuter de sa démarche de création artistique en tant qu’auteure et en tant qu’anarchiste. Puisque l’œuvre a été traduite, la soirée sera bilingue: Carole Lamoureux, animatrice de clubs de lecture, lira des extraits du livre afin de faire valoir la force du texte dans la langue de Molière. De plus, des traductions chuchotées seront disponibles dans les deux langues.

Cara Hoffman est née et a grandi dans une petite ville du nord de l’État de New York. En 2000, elle reçoit un prix de la New York State Foundation for the Arts pour ses écrits sur l’esthétisme de la violence et son impact sur la jeunesse, sujet qu’elle continue d’aborder dans son premier roman So much pretty publié en France aux éditions Stock. Elle a depuis publié Be Safe I Love You, 2014, Running, 2017, Simon and Schuster.

Carole Lamoureux, détentrice d’une maîtrise en Études Littéraires, enseigne la littérature pour les antennes universitaires de l’Université de Sherbrooke depuis 15 ans et anime des Clubs de lecture à Montréal et à Laval. Son approche est féministe et socio-historique.

Le comité événement de la librairie L’Insoumise et de la bibliothèque anarchiste DIRA regroupe des bénévoles de ces deux organisations. Il a comme objectif d’organiser des événements au D.I.R.A dans le but d’animer une vie culturelle et politique anarchiste.

À propos du livre: Haeden,une bourgade de l’État de New York, n’est pas le petit coin de paradis qu’avait espéré trouver Claire et Gene, un couple écologiste venu élever leur fille Alice à la campagne. Une jolie serveuse des environs a été retrouvée violée et assassinée dans les bois. Stacy Flynn, journaliste ambitieuse, va tout faire pour retrouver les coupables avec l’aide d’Alice. Au risque de déclencher une spirale de violence dont personne ne sortira indemne…

A discussion with Cara Hoffman

At 7pm on Thrusday October 27th 2016 (not October 23), the events committee of L’Insoumise anarchist bookstore and DIRA anarchist library invites the public to a discussion about the book So much Pretty with its author Cara Hoffman. Carole Lamoureux, who leads many book clubs, will also participate. This free event will take place at DIRA anarchist library at 2035 St-Laurent Boulevard in Montreal.

This book has been acclaimed by American critics for its strong political connotation and its strength. The evening will be the occasion to hear Cara Hoffman talk about her creative process as an author and as an anarchist. Since this novel has been translated into French, the event will be bilingual: Carole Lamoureux will read parts of the book so that we can feel the power of its text in Moliere’s language. Whispered translation will be available for both languages.

CARA HOFFMAN was born and raised in a small town in northern New York State. She is the author of the critically acclaimed novels So Much Pretty and Be Safe I Love You . She has written for the New York Times, The New York Times Book Review, Salon and Marie Claire; has appeared on NPR, Canadian Broadcasting, ABC News and the BBC World Service. She is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including a Folio Prize nomination, and a Sundance Institute Global Filmmaking Award. She has also been a visiting writer at Columbia, St. John’s and University of Oxford.

CAROLE LAMOUREUX, who has a masters degree in Literature, has been teaching literature at University of Sherbrooke campus for 15 years and leads book club discussions in Montreal and Laval. Her approach is feminist and socio-historical.

The events committee of L’Insoumise anarchist bookstore and DIRA anarchist library has volunteers from those two organizations. Its objective is to organize events at DIRA with the aim of animating a cultural and political anarchist scene.

About the book: Set in a rural community steeped in silence and denial, So Much Pretty explores all parents’ greatest fear, that their child will be hurt. But it also examines a second, equally troubling question: What if my child hurts someone else? The disappearance and murder of nineteen-year-old Wendy White is detailed through the eyes of journalist Stacy Flynn and a host of other richly drawn characters, each with their own secrets and convictions. After Wendy’s body is found, Flynn’s intense crusade to expose a killer draws the attention of a precocious local girl, Alice Piper, whose story intertwines with Wendy’s in a spellbinding and unexpected climax.
