4 police shootings in 2019 'a lot': watchdog

Winnipeg police officers have fired their guns during confrontations with suspects four times so far this year, and it's only the beginning of March.

The last time the city saw this many police shootings was in 2017, when the tally for the year was five, including two deaths.

Zane Tessler, who heads the IIU, said while police shootings do seem to happen in clusters, each case has unique circumstances.

"I want to hold off on whether I'm ready to say that there is a specific trend that is emerging from those incidents," he said

"[Four shootings] is a lot though for our jurisdiction and we're just not used to having this many in this short period of time," said Tessler.
