Trial begins for RCMP officer involved in 2016 fatal crash

The first day of witnesses spoke in a trial involving a Wood Buffalo RCMP officer who has pled not guilty regarding a 2016 incident that ended with one man dead and another injured.

According to the Crown, Const. Michelle Phillips is charged with one count dangerous driving causing death and one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

She was charged in June 2017, after an investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response team (ASIRT). She pled not guilty in August 2017.

On Aug. 21, 2016, Tracy Lyle Janvier, 41, was walking down highway 881, south of Anzac, when he was hit and seriously injured.

During the first day of the trial, Phillips showed no visible reactions as Crown prosecutor Douglas Taylor presented witnesses to the incident.
