Defence expert says officer's decision to take down theft suspect was justified

Bloodied theft suspect Daniel Haworth posed a significant threat when he was violently thrown to the ground by a Calgary police officer, a defence expert testified Wednesday.

Retired Calgary police Insp. Chris Butler told court the decision by Const. Trevor Lindsay to conduct a leverage takedown of the handcuffed Haworth followed standard training procedures.

But Butler said Lindsay failed to carry out the manoeuvre properly, resulting in what he believes was the accidental slamming of Haworth’s head to the pavement.
