Street checks, deemed illegal by former top judge, to be banned across Nova Scotia

HALIFAX—Street checks, the illegal practice known elsewhere as carding, will soon be permanently banned across Nova Scotia. But after a sometimes-ineffective moratorium, there are concerns the practice could continue under a different name without larger structural change within policing.

Justice Minister Mark Furey made the announcement at Province House on Friday afternoon just after the release of a legal opinion from Michael MacDonald, former Chief Justice of the Nova Scotia Appeal Court.
