Mother witnessed police shoot son in Exeter after calling 911 for help: Relative

An Exeter man was fatally shot by police after his mother called 911 to get him help, a family member tells The London Free Press.

Diane Vanderwal watched as Huron OPP officers fired six times at her son, Wade Vanderwal, outside their home at 65 Simcoe St. in Exeter, according to an account shared by the grieving mother’s niece, Jennifer Whaling.

“The last thing Aunt Diane has seen of him was him on the ground after he’d been shot,” Whaling said Friday.

Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), says it’s probing the actions of two OPP officers in the death of Vanderwal, 44, who they say was armed with an axe when he was shot Tuesday night.

Wade Vanderwal, who had struggled with mental-health issues since he was a child, had told his mother that the army was coming before locking her out of the house, Whaling said.
