Peel police constable charged with sexual assault

Peel Regional Police have charged a constable with sexual assault following a two-month investigation.

Police received a complaint in April alleging a sexual assault by an officer while he was off-duty.

On Wednesday, investigators from the force’s Professional Standards Bureau arrested Const. Latshman Raghunath in relation to the allegations.

Raghunath, a 5-year-member of the service, was charged with one count of sexual assault.

“Our members will be held responsible for their actions, as police officers we are held to a higher standard than those who we have been sworn to serve,” said Chief Nishan Durraiappah.

Raghunath is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on July 6.

He is currently suspended from service, and once the criminal court proceedings have been completed, a Police Services Act investigation will follow.
