SIU clears Toronto police officers who shot and killed man wanted in January homicide

The Special Investigations Unit has cleared three Toronto police officers who shot and killed a 37-year-old man wanted in a Scarborough homicide earlier this year.

Emergency crews responded to a fire on Jan. 13 at around 3 a.m. at an 18-storey apartment building at 25 Bay Mills Boulevard, near Sheppard Avenue East and Warden Avenue.

Shortly after extinguishing the fire, 49-year-old Maryna Kudzianiuk was found suffering from serious injuries and transported to hospital where she died. An autopsy determined that her death was a homicide.

On Jan. 18, police attempted to arrest Ricardo Mirabelles, of Toronto, near Scarborough Town Centre in connection to her death. During his arrest, three officers fired their weapons and shot Mirabelles, who was taken to hospital and died from his injuries on Feb. 3.

There were “no reasonable grounds” to believe that any of the officers committed a criminal offence in the shooting, SIU director Joseph Martino said in a news release Friday.
