The SIU has charged a Durham police officer for opening fire at a fleeing suspect vehicle in Oshawa.

It happened the afternoon of April 16.

Durham police were called about a suspicious person and a theft from the LCBO at Taunton Road and Harmony Road.

The province’s police watchdog says an officer arrived in the area and fired their gun multiple times at the suspect vehicle as the driver drove forward.

Police pursued the vehicle and it was later stopped in the Highway 401 and Highway 427 area.

The driver was taken into custody.

No one was hurt.

Constable Kevin Wintle has been charged with careless use of a firearm contrary to Section 86 (1) of the Criminal Code.
