Toronto officer pleads guilty to misconduct for shooting at unarmed man who had back turned

A Toronto police constable has pleaded guilty to misconduct for shooting at an unarmed man in an apartment building parking lot around 11 a.m. in March 2017.

In a police disciplinary tribunal on Monday morning, Const. Anita Watton admitted she failed to comply with the Toronto police force policies and training on use of force and firearms when she chased the man with her gun drawn and fired at him.

Her shot missed the man and he was not physically injured, although his lawyer has said he was psychologically affected.

According to the agreed statement of facts filed with the tribunal, Watton stopped the man’s vehicle and chased him on foot when he ran away.
