This year marks the beginning of the second decade of Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) in Montreal, joining with similar IAWs around the world. Our theme this year is resistance to colonialism and racism.

This year’s IAW-Montreal is organized in the aftermath of Israel’s brutal attack on Gaza last summer. We are also hoping to build on this past fall’s BDS success by undergraduate students at Concordia University.

Apartheid 101 Workshop & Presentation, co-presented by QPIRG Concordia & Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR)

An introductory presentation to the apartheid analysis of occupation and colonization, linking Israel’s apartheid policies in Palestine to the realities of global apartheid, as well as the practice of separation and exclusion, from Canada’s Indian Act to South Africa’s apartheid-era Bantustans. This workshop is intended for people relatively new to Palestine solidarity and BDS organizing. Welcome to all.

A discussion on past and ongoing racial violence and race relations in the United States, Canada, and Occupied Palestine. Systemic links will be drawn across borders, and government tactics and the ways that police reproduce colonial mentalities will be explored.

Join us for a community dinner and panel discussion about Indigenous Resistance to colonialism and racism. Our featured speaker is Glen Coulthard, a Weledeh Dene (Yellowknives Dene First Nation), author of Red Skin, White Masks: Rejecting the Colonial Politics of Recognition, and part of the Indigenous Nationhood Movement. We will also hear from Budour Hassan (via skype from occupied Jerusalem). Budour is a Palestinian anarchist, a law graduate, and a frequent contributor to the Electronic Intifada.

Sounds of Justice Poetry Night, with Suheir Hammad & Moe Clark

Location: Café l'Artère, 7000 avenue du Parc

Featured performers include Suheir Hammad and Moe Clark. Suheir Hammad is a Palestinian-American poet, author and political activist based in New York City. She is the author of breaking poems, recipient of a 2009 American Book Award and the Arab American Book award for Poetry 2009. Her other books are ZaatarDiva; Born Palestinian, Born Black; and Drops of This Story. Moe Clark is a multidisciplinary Métis artist, looping pedal mistress, spoken word poet, educator, artistic producer, public speaker and activist based in Montreal.

Boycott from Within: A Talk with Eran Efrati & Maya Wind

Location: 7th floor CSU Lounge, 1455 de Maisonneuve West, métro Guy-Concordia

Eran Efrati is a former Israeli combat soldier. In 2009, he was discharged and joined Breaking the Silence, an organization of veteran Israeli soldiers working to raise awareness about the daily reality in the Occupied Territories. His collected testimonies from soldiers appear in the booklet "Operation Cast Lead.” His investigative reports appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian. Maya Wind is a conscientious objector who refused to serve in the Israeli army; she has worked with New Profile, the feminist movement to demilitarize Israel. Eran and Maya are both active with Anarchists Against the Wall and Boycott from Within.

Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Montreal Student Roundtable

Location: Café Aquin (A-2445), 400, rue Sainte-Catherine est (métro Berri-UQAM)

The culmination of Israeli Apartheid Week in Montreal will take the form of a roundtable of student organizers and activists who are committed to building the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaigns at Montreal-area colleges and universities. We will have participants from Concordia University (where BDS resolutions have been successful at the undergraduate and graduate level), McGill and UQÀM, as well as representatives from student associations such as ASSÉ. We encourage local students to join this roundtable as we tangibly build opposition to Israeli apartheid at colleges and universities. Cette année marque le début de la deuxième décennie de la Semaine contre l’apartheid israélien (SAI) à Montréal, qui s'ajoute à d'autres SAI dans le monde. Notre thème cette année : la résistance contre le colonialisme et le racisme.

L'édition de cette année se tient dans la foulée de l'attaque brutale de Gaza par Israël l'été dernier. Nous comptons aussi bâtir sur l'élan du succès de la campagne boycott, désinvestissement et sanctions (BDS) des étudiant.e.s de l'Université Concordia l'automne dernier.

Parmi les artistes invités, citons Suheir Hammad et Moe Clark. Suheir Hammad, poète palestinienne-américaine, auteure et activiste politique de New York, a rédigé le recueil breaking poems, récipiendaire des prix American Book Award 2009 et Arab American Book award for Poetry 2009. Ses autres livres : ZaatarDiva; Born Palestinian, Born Black; et Drops of This Story. Moe Clark est une artiste métisse multidisciplinaire : virtuose de la pédale de boucle, poète de spoken word, éducatrice, productrice artistique, conférencière et activiste de Montréal.

Lieu : Faculté de droit de l'Université McGill (détails à être confirmés sous peu)

L'atelier comptera des contributions de Steven Salaita, de Samia al-Botmeh et de deux activistes locaux du mouvement BDS. Steven est actif au sein de la Campagne américaine pour le boycott universitaire et culturel d'Israël (USACBI), et Samia au sein de la Campagne palestinienne pour le boycott universitaire et culturel d'Israël (PACBI).

Boycott de l'intérieur : discussion avec Eran Efrati et Maya Wind

Lieu : Salon du CSU, 1455, de Maisonneuve ouest, 7e étage, métro Guy-Concordia

Eran Efrati est un ancien soldat d'infanterie d'Israël. En 2009, libéré de son service militaire, il s'est joint à Breaking the Silence, organisation de vétérans de l'armée israélienne qui vise à révéler la réalité quotidienne des Territoires occupés. Les témoignages qu'il a recueillis figurent dans le livret Operation Cast Lead. Ses enquêtes-reportages sont parues dans le New York Times, le Washington Post et The Guardian. Maya Wind est une objectrice de conscience qui a refusé de servir dans l'armée israélienne. Elle a travaillé dans le groupe New Profile, mouvement féministe pour la démilitarisation d'Israël. Eran et Maya sont tous deux actifs dans les groupes Anarchistes contre le mur et Boycott de l'intérieur.

Table ronde étudiante : boycott, désinvestissement et sanctions (BDS)

Lieu : Café Aquin (A-2445), 400, rue Sainte-Catherine est (métro Berri-UQAM)

Le point culminant de la Semaine contre l'apartheid israélien à Montréal est une table ronde d'organisateurs étudiants et d'activistes qui souhaitent bâtir des campagnes de boycott, désinvestissement et sanctions dans les établissements collégiaux et universitaires de la région de Montréal. Nous compterons des participants de Concordia (où des résolutions BDS ont été adoptées au premier cycle et aux cycles supérieurs), de McGill et de l'UQÀM, ainsi que des représentants d'associations étudiantes comme l'ASSÉ. Nous encourageons les étudiants de la région à se joindre à la table ronde pour bâtir une solide opposition à l'apartheid israélien dans les établissements collégiaux et universitaires. Communiquez avec nous si vous souhaitez y participer en tant que représentant de votre campus ou de votre association étudiante.
