On three separate occasions between March 15 and March 22, the Montreal police surrounded and arrested demonstrators before they could begin protesting. The SPVM issued hundreds of “P-6” municipal tickets to add to the hundreds more they’ve written in the past year. Montreal’s City Council increased the P-6 fine to more than $500 for a first offence last May.

The Montreal police, with the complicity of city politicians (and the provincial government), are trying to shut down street protests that don’t have their permission, and they’re doing so with impunity, and with little public uproar.

On FRIDAY, APRIL 5, we’ll attempt to take back the streets to protest. The “right to protest” isn’t something provided by the police and the state, it’s something we assert ourselves.

We are calling openly for a demonstration against Montreal’s P-6 by-law, and we’ll do so by openly defying the by-law during a family-friendly demonstration.

We remind participants that a municipal by-law offence is the equivalent of a parking ticket. It’s not a criminal charge. We will support efforts to challenge P-6 in the courts, but we can’t wait for the by-law to be rescinded. We need to assert our ability to protest now.

The CLAC, with the support of CORAIL, will be demonstrating on FRIDAY, APRIL 5th at 6pm (please arrive early, or on-time, and come with a friend, or in an affinity group, for mutual support).

This is a public, family-friendly, civil disobedience action. We intend to defy Montreal’s municipal bylaw, and assume the consequences of our dissent, as part of ongoing and diverse efforts in Montreal to oppose police repression, and as part of larger efforts of militant opposition against capitalism, including the upcoming anti-capitalist May Day.
