Off-duty Fort Saskatchewan RCMP officer justified in firing at fleeing suspect: ASIRT

An off-duty Fort Saskatchewan RCMP officer acted appropriately when he fired his gun at a truck that was fleeing a police stop and headed right toward him, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team said Thursday.

"While it is unfortunate that the lives of both the officer and the driver were placed at risk during this encounter, that risk resulted from the driver's attempt to escape what was a lawful detention by members of the RCMP," ASIRT said in a news release.

"The force used in response to that escape attempt was reasonable given all of the circumstances."

No one was injured in the September 2017 shooting. The subsequent arrest marked the end of a 300-kilometre crime spree, that started in Lac la Biche and ended in Wetaskiwin.
