Saskatoon police defend continued increase in Taser use

The Saskatoon Police Service’s use of conducted energy weapons (Tasers) has tripled since 2016.

Officers used them 11 times in 2016, 21 times in 2017 and 33 times in 2018.

The information was included in the Use of Force report presented to the Saskatoon board of police commissioners meeting on Wednesday.

In his comments on the report, Mayor Charlie Clark, who is a member of the police board, asked for greater context around each incident during which a Taser is deployed.

Currently, every incident is recorded and evaluated on an individual basis. Police report every incident to the public and submit the information to the provincial police commission in their annual reports.
