Stony Plain RCMP officer charged with assault after excessive force investigation

A Stony Plain RCMP officer has been charged after an investigation into excessive force used during an October arrest.

Mounties were in pursuit of a stolen work vehicle on Oct. 24 when they successfully deployed a spike belt. The driver of the stolen vehicle lost control while attempting to turn and was taken into custody, RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

As the officers restrained the driver, it is alleged one officer used excessive force.

A statutory investigation was completed by a neighbouring detachment, said RCMP Wednesday.

Const. Dorian Tooze is charged with one count of assault. There is no change to Tooze’s duty status. He has been with the RCMP for two years.

He is to appear in Stony Plain provincial court May 1.
