STM adds new 'vigilance committee' to oversee métro inspectors

Montreal’s transit authority announced Tuesday it will create a permanent “vigilance committee” to oversee relations between its métro inspectors and the public, and hire an independent expert in criminology and ethics to aid in inspectors’ transition toward becoming special constables.

The STM’s board of directors adopted a motion in early April to move toward conferring the status of special constable on inspectors within the transit agency, that would allow inspectors who currently direct foot traffic, check fares and detain individuals until police arrive, to make arrests themselves. The motion has the support of Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante.
