Slave Lake RCMP officer charged with assault from September 2017 arrest: ASIRT

A Slave Lake Mountie has been charged with assault by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) stemming from an investigation into a case from September 2017.

It started on Sept. 19, 2017, at around 5:40 a.m., when the Slave Lake RCMP arrested a 30-year-old man for mischief and took him to the detachment. The man was “grossly intoxicated” at the time of his arrest, police said.

The arresting officer was processing the man’s personal effects when the man took off an outer shirt and threw it underhand at the officer, who caught the shirt in his hand, police said. Video footage showed the officer in response took the man to the ground and began punching him repeatedly in the head, kneeing him in the back and pushing the man’s head into the floor.
