No charges against police in arrest of teen gym trespasser

No charges will be laid against the police officer who used force and finally a taser to arrest an 18-year-old man whom police had twice been summoned to remove from a Barrhaven gym, the province’s civilian police watchdog has concluded.

The young man suffered a broken eye socket during the May 2018 arrest but Joseph Martino, interim director of the Special Investigations Unit, said he was satisfied that the takedown, punch, knee strike and the use of the conducted energy weapon (CEW) “was reasonably necessary in the context of an uncooperative trespasser who forcefully resisted his arrest right up until he was stunned.”
