B.C. police watchdog deployed to Prince George following in-custody death

B.C.’s police watchdog has been deployed to Prince George after an individual died while in police custody.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is investigating after an individual was arrested, went into distress and later died after being arrested.

According to the IIOBC, the person was arrested by Prince George RCMP on Friday evening around 9:30 p.m. for causing a distance. The individual was placed in a holding cell in police custody overnight.

Around 4:25 a.m. on Saturday, the person appeared to be in distress. Paramedics took the individual to hospital but the person did not survive. Hospital staff notified RCMP around 6:45 a.m. that the person had died.

No further details – including the individual’s identity – have been released at this time. The IIO is investigating.
