Former St. Thomas cop sentenced to 30 months for relationship with teen

Former St. Thomas police officer Garry Christiansen looked indifferent in the prisoner’s box as Justice George Orsini handed down a 30-month sentence Friday for sexual interference.

He was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs for the almost year and a half sexual relationship he had with a 15-year-old girl, who cannot be identified under a publication ban.

Christiansen, 57, pleaded guilty in June shortly after retiring from the St. Thomas Police Service.

Christiansen was originally charged in October 2017 with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, sexual exploitation and assault involving the underage girl after an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers. He was suspended with pay. The other charges were eventually withdrawn by the Crown. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the province’s police watchdog, was also contacted.
