Police shooting of unarmed man lawful: ASIRT

Shooting an unarmed man was justified because the officer had reason to believe he had a gun, Alberta’s police watchdog has found.

A 34-year-old man was seriously injured when he was shot by an Edmonton police officer wearing plain clothes who was attempting to arrest him on March 30, 2017. The officer told investigators with the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) the man was reaching into his pants pocket and began pulling out a dark object with a straight edge. Believing it to be a handgun, he fired.
