Long London SIU inquiries bug police board

Ontario’s police watchdog agency is taking more than three times the average length of time to close investigations into London police officers.

Numbers that came to the London Police Services Board Thursday show Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, which probes any cases of serious injury or death to civilians involving police, as well as allegations of sexual assault against officers, took an average 364 days to complete probes into London officers last year.

That flies in the face of its 111-day average close rate, and the recommendation that the SIU wrap up cases within 120 days, a target set by Justice Michael Tulloch in a 2017 report on police oversight in Ontario.

And those long waits didn’t sit well with Coun. Mo Salih, who was elected 2018 police board chair at Thursday’s meeting. Susan Toth was elected vice-chair.
