Since the outbreak of the Syrian Revolution, in Kurdish-majority northern Syria (also known as Rojava), diverse local populations have embarked on an extraordinary social project: they are overturning 5000 years of patriarchy and creating a grassroots democratic society beyond the nation-state. Their system of 'democratic confederalism' is based on gender empowerment, participatory democracy, ethnic harmony, ecology, and transformative justice and it is a model to inspire the whole Middle East and the world.

Administered by the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria (DFNS), Rojava has been the safest and most peaceful region in the country in spite of the terrible civil war. At the same time, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by the Kurdish majority YPG, have been the most reliable fighters against Daesh. However, their proposals for a feminist grassroots democracy in Syria and beyond have been blocked by the other actors in the war. And the world shut its eyes at Turkey's brutal invasion of the Afrin canton, which has employed former Daesh fighters and involved ethnic cleansing and sexual violence. There are grave concerns for another Turkish invasion and Genocide Watch has recently placed the Kurds on a genocide warning list. And after seven years of war, with an alleged new chemical attack on Douma, tensions seem only to be violently mounting across Syria between between the Assad government and the rebel militias, between the US and Russia, and between Israel, and Iran and Hezbollah. Could the new society being created in Rojava be a model of hope for Syria and the broader Middle East... and for ourselves?

The honourable SINAM MOHAMED is the foreign envoy of the DFNS administration of Rojava. She has previously served as the co-president of the People’s Council of Rojava, the main political body of Rojava that was founded in 2011 during the Syrian Revolution. Ms. Mohamed is also a member of the Kurdish Supreme Committee in Rojava, part of the leadership of the Democratic Society Movement and is involved in the administration of the Star Union of Women. She holds a degree in English Literature from the University of Aleppo.

The talk will be in English with whispered translation into French and a bilingual discussion. Childcare will be provided. The event is on the ground floor, with no stairs. For all questions, please contact: rojavamontreal@protonmail.com; 514-561-4656.
