Bloc QueerX & FEMINISM

Gender X, English subtitles, documentaire, 1h 25 minutes
A city always known as a magnet for alternate lifestyles, Berlin has been attracting people of different and interesting "genders" since the 19th Century. Director Julia Ostertag, camera in hand, takes us through a tour of unusual (and some not) clubs throughout the city during a period of a few months. We encounter known personalities, drag queens and other night creatures, all a tad peculiar. Sexuality without borders, and breaking taboos are the main themes addressed. The documentary, above all, questions the concept of "normalcy" and the many prejudices established by society as a whole, and the different segments of society shown on film.

POW (Piss of War), English, fiction, 8 minutes

Lauding demise of Griffintown, français, 15 minutes

Flores, English subtitles, 15 minutes
In the midst of the daily encounters and mismatches, the construction of big real estate enterprises modifies the city architecture. Meanwhile, time engraves relentlessly its marks.

This is Parkdale, English, 34 minutes
In the summer of 2017, in the Toronto neighbourhood of Parkdale, over 300 tenants living across 12 apartment buildings went on rent strike to protest a wave of rent increases that would have displaced members of their community. Through months of organizing and a series of escalating actions, working-class people took on the biggest corporate landlord in their neighbourhood... and won. In an age where gentrification is rapidly transforming the nature and demographics of working-class neighbourhoods in cities across the world, pushing out poorer tenants, people on fixed incomes, immigrant communities and other long-term residents, the story of the Parkdale rent strike offers an important and practical lesson on how we can organize with our neighbours to fight back.

Trouble, English, documentaire, 32 minutes
There Goes the Neighbourhood: Gentrification as Class Warfare

In cities across the world, established urban environments are being transformed according to the dictates of capital. Gentrification is destroying the social fabric of working-class and racialized districts, displacing long-standing residents in order to make way for a new class of upwardly-mobile, and often white professionals – who often view the rich local histories of the spaces they move into as nothing more than kitschy branding appeal. The culture clash that emerges between established community members and these new arrivals is often viewed as the front-line of struggles around gentrification; a quarrel between patrons of a locally-owned roti shop, and those of a new craft beer pub; or a battle between NIMBY condo-dwellers and the beneficiaries of a local social service agency.

But while this tension is certainly real, it is only the tip of the iceberg. Gentrification is a systematic process, facilitated by state, regional and local governments and bankrolled by massive financial institutions managing multi-billion dollar portfolios. It is class war playing out in physical space, with all the complexities and contradictions that entails.

In this month’s episode of Trouble, the first in a two-part series, sub.Media examines gentrification as a process of capitalist urban development, by taking a closer look at how it is playing out in three mega-cities: Toronto, New Orleans and Istanbul.

Badh, Let her Breathe, English subtitles, fiction, 7 minutes
Badh is the story of a woman who has a great desire to have a grandson but hasn't had her dream fulfilled yet. Her daughter in law is pregnant again. Will she give birth to a son this time?

Pinky Gurung, English subtitles, documentaire, 13 minutes
Members of Nepal’s LGBTI community were once openly derided as “social pollutants,” but now enjoy social and political rights including legal recognition of a third gender, that put the country leagues ahead of much of the rest of the world. The past decade has proved critical in that evolution, as LGBTI activists won significant victories in Nepal’s courts.
With the second phase of elections to the House of Representatives and State Assemblies just around the corner, Pinky Gurung (a transwoman) is busy in a door-to-door campaign. She is a candidate under Proportional Representation (PR) category from one of the political party.
Gurung is of the view that there is a need for representation of transgender in the new parliament to raise the voices of gender and sexual minority. Gurung hopes that people who love transgender will vote her which will be instrumental in her victory.
She is encouraged to receive support from voters.
Members of gender and sexual minority are campaigning in favor of Gurung.

Bloc Why not finish with a punk film?

Rejects of the second generation, Following the traces of Punk, English subtitles,
Documentaire, 1h

Punk had to die so it could live.
After the independence of Slovenia it seemed that the story of Slovenian punk is finished. But every end is a new beginning. After 1991 rose a new, second generation of punks who still believe that another world is possible and necessary. Active members of the underground: musicians, activists, squatters, music promoters and organizers tell us about punk ideology, culture, music, squatting movement, lust for freedom and political struggle under the flag of anarchism. Firsthand, forthright.
This is a document of independence, love for music and creativity. Reflection on the work of passion and of the world, not driven by capital.
From the punks for the punks.

Wohoo, quel bô programme n'est-ce pas!? ;)
Allez, viens-t-en!
