Police watchdog lays assault charge against London officer

Ontario’s police watchdog has charged a London police officer with assault causing bodily harm after a man was injured while being arrested at a hospital.

A man, 54, was taken to Victoria Hospital’s emergency room on Feb. 10 by a Good Samaritan. A London police officer who was at the hospital on an unrelated matter learned the injured man was wanted on an outstanding warrant, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said.

A second officer arrived at the hospital and arrested the wanted man, who suffered serious injuries during the arrest, the watchdog said, noting the officer wasn’t hurt.

“There was an interaction and the man sustained serious injuries,” the SIU said in a statement.
