Hamilton cop who responded to shooting of Yosif Al-Hasnawi will not be charged, says police watchdog

Ontario's police watchdog says there are "no reasonable grounds" to lay charges against a Hamilton police officer who responded the night Yosif Al-Hasnawi was fatally shot.

The 19-year-old aspiring doctor was shot on the sidewalk near the Al-Mostafa Islamic Centre after stepping in to stop two men harassing an older one on the street Dec. 2, 2017.

Witnesses accused some first responders on the scene of joking around and dismissing the seriousness of Al-Hasnawi's injury because they initially believed it to be a pellet gun wound. It took 38 minutes from the time paramedics arrived to get the injured teenager to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit launched a probe in August 2018 into the conduct of one of the Hamilton police officers who responded to the shooting.
