B.C. police watchdog investigates death of woman in VPD holding cell

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been called in to investigate the death of woman in a Vancouver police holding cell.

The woman was arrested Saturday, at around 8:55 a.m., near the 500-block of Powell Street in the city’s Downtown Eastside and was transferred to the VPD’s cells. Police say she was later found unresponsive in her cell around noon the same day.

Both police and paramedics tended to the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither the woman’s name, nor the cause of her death, have been released.

The IIO, an independent body tasked with investigating all police-related incidents that result in serious injury or death, will determine what role, if any, officers may have played in the woman’s death.
